Our Founding Mission
Keele University was founded in 1949 with a pioneering vision: to introduce of a different kind of university. Our founder, Lord Lindsay, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, envisioned an institution that would not merely produce specialised scientists, but cultivated individuals, capable of understanding and contributing meaningfully to the world around them.
Keele was the first new university to be established in the UK in the 20th century. In 1969, it was described as “the most original innovation in British university education in the 20th century”.
