A new international recognition for University of Keele Greece

University of Keele Greece has been shortlisted for the international PIEoneer Awards 2026 in the category “Digital Innovation of the Year – Learning” for the initiative: “The Hippocrates AI-Enabled Immersive Medical Education Ecosystem”. The recognition highlights the growing role of immersive and AI-enabled learning ecosystems in shaping the future of international higher education and healthcare training.

A comprehensive ecosystem for technology-enhanced healthcare education

The “Hippocrates AI-Enabled Immersive Medical Education Ecosystem” integrates a broad range of innovative educational technologies and applications, including:

  • AI-enabled clinical simulation environments,
  • Immersive simulation theatre technologies,
  • Virtual patient learning platforms,
  • SIMStation-supported OSCE assessment systems,
  • Digital anatomy and virtual dissection technologies,
  • High-fidelity medical simulation systems,
  • Biomedical innovation laboratories,
  • Interdisciplinary simulation-based healthcare education.

Artificial intelligence is embedded across multiple levels of the educational process. Through realistic clinical scenarios enabled by AI technologies and immersive systems, students are able to develop clinical reasoning, decision-making, teamwork and practical competencies before entering real clinical environments.

Addressing the evolving challenges of healthcare education

The initiative responds to major challenges facing modern healthcare education internationally, including limited access to clinical training environments, the increasing demand for experiential learning, the integration of digital technologies into medical education, the expanding role of artificial intelligence and simulation in healthcare training, as well as the need for interdisciplinary and practice-based educational models.

An international innovation and technology ecosystem

The ecosystem has been developed through the contribution of academic teams, specialised collaborators and a broader international network of partners operating in the fields of medical simulation, digital anatomy, educational technologies and healthcare innovation. Among the organisations and companies contributing to the development of the ecosystem are — among others — Gaumard Scientific, SIMStation, 3B Scientific, Anatomage, Surglasses, Mindray, GE HealthCare, Stratasys, 4th Dimension Technologies and Bio-Tech.gr. The Hippocrates Campus ecosystem reflects the transition towards a new international model of immersive, simulation-based and AI-enabled medical education.

The PIEoneer Awards are among the leading international awards in higher education globally, recognising organisations and initiatives that actively contribute to shaping the future of education through innovation, international collaboration and social impact.
